Beach Towns at a Glance: Coco, Hermosa, Flamingo and Potrero
Every beach town in Guanacaste has its own personality, and the one you choose shapes your daily life more than any floor plan. Let's tour them in the order you'd likely meet them, starting closest to Liberia's airport and working our way south.

Playas del Coco: the easygoing hub
Coco is where I live and work, and it's often the first town newcomers fall for. It's a compact, lively beach town about a 25-minute drive from Liberia International Airport (LIR).
- The feel: A busy little center built around a seafront walkway (the malecón), with restaurants, shops and a real year-round community.
- Everyday services: Several banks and ATMs, a local health clinic and pharmacies. The nearest major hospital is in Liberia.
- On the water: Coco is a diving base, with boat trips to sites such as the Catalina Islands and the Bat Islands (the latter for advanced divers).
- Best for: Buyers who want walkable conveniences, a social scene and a quick trip to the airport.
Playa Hermosa: calm and close
Just north of Coco, Playa Hermosa (literally "beautiful beach") is a curving gray-sand crescent framed by forested hills. It's also about 25 minutes from LIR.
- The feel: Quieter and more residential than Coco, with hotels and homes along the bay rather than a busy town center.
- The water: The bay is generally protected, with gentle surf that suits families and swimmers. Rocky headlands at each end have tide pools to explore.
- Next door: Playa Panamá, a few kilometers on, is one of the area's least developed beaches, and the Papagayo Peninsula's resorts are nearby.
- Best for: Buyers who want peace and swimmable water, with Coco's restaurants and shops a short drive away.
Playa Flamingo: polished and panoramic
Head about 45 minutes south of the airport and you reach Flamingo, known for its long, broad stretch of pinkish-white sand on Potrero Bay.
- The feel: Upscale and scenic. Many homes and hotels sit on the hill at the north end, with sweeping views over the bay.
- Boating: Marina Flamingo was officially inaugurated in 2023, bringing slips, dry storage and shoreside villas. It's a draw for sailors and sportfishing fans.
- Everyday services: A Banco de Costa Rica branch, a pharmacy and medical center, a car rental office and small shopping centers.
- Best for: Buyers looking for ocean-view homes, boating access and a refined, quieter pace.
Playa Potrero: village life by the bay
Just around the bay from Flamingo, also roughly 45 minutes from LIR, Potrero keeps the feel of a traditional Costa Rican coastal village.
- The feel: Rural and tranquil, with a village plaza, a few markets and local restaurants rather than large developments.
- The beaches: Playa Potrero is long and very calm for swimming, with views across to Flamingo. Farther north, quieter beaches such as Playa La Penca and Playa Prieta are good for swimming, snorkeling and kayaking.
- Best for: Buyers who want a slower, more local lifestyle, with Flamingo's services minutes away.
A quick nod to Tamarindo
About an hour from LIR, Tamarindo is Guanacaste's largest developed beach town and a well-known surf spot, with the most nightlife and tourist traffic of the group. Nearby Las Baulas National Marine Park protects nesting leatherback sea turtles. It's worth a visit, though many buyers prefer the calmer towns above for everyday living.
How to choose your town
- Decide on your daily rhythm. Walkable and social points to Coco. Quiet and residential points to Hermosa or Potrero. Views and boating point to Flamingo.
- Time your drives. If you'll fly in and out often, Coco and Hermosa's shorter airport runs add up over the years.
- Check the essentials. Note how far each area is from groceries, a pharmacy, a clinic and the hospital in Liberia.
- Stay before you buy. As we covered in Part 2, renting for a few weeks or months in your top choice is the best test.
Drive times are approximate and vary with traffic and road conditions.
